Design Challenge is a venue where students, academics and practitioners from a variety of design and technology backgrounds (HCI, UX, industrial design, product design, visual design, interaction design etc.) demonstrate their problem solving and design skills in an international design competition against each other to solve socio-cultural issues in Indonesia.

The design challenge will provide CHIuXiD 2015 attendees with refreshing perspectives on how design teams from different disciplines and different Asia Pacific region approach a common design problem. It will also give a chance to meet others working in similar area, and provide competition participants with an opportunity to network with HCI and Design professionals.

  1. IDR 6 million and IDR 4 million prizes for 1st and 2nd Winners in both categories (total amount of IDR 20 million – subject to tax).

  4. Certificate of participation for all teams whose proposals are accepted in the first round and participated actively.

Round 1: Proposal Submission

  1. Design Team. Pick your best team members. At least two, but no more than three people per team from any given university or organization. However, one participant cannot be part of multiple teams.
  2. Design Problem. The design problem for this challenge is “Banjir di Indonesia (Flood in Indonesia)”.
  3. Design Proposal. Propose some ideas of an interactive technology-based design solution to solve the flood problems in Indonesia. It can be in any forms, such as applications, products, systems, services, etc and address the selection criteria.
  4. Design Deliverable. Create a 2-min video and a poster (in PDF format, A3 poster size, 297mm X 420mm) to describe your ideas.
  5. Proposal Submission. Upload your video to Youtube/Vimeo. Create a Word document containing the names of your team members, a link to your video and attach your poster through CHI UX Indonesia 2015 Easy Chair.
  6. Deadline of the proposal submission is 20 February 2015 – (11:59 WIB – Western Indonesian Time).
  7. Promote your ideas to the public. Tell your friends about your video in youtube/vimeo, ask them to vote and give their feedback. We will monitor the constructive feedback from the public about your design proposal as a part of the review.
  8. A notification of  acceptance/rejection will be sent to each team by 27 February 2015.
  9. Reviews. The team whose proposal got accepted have address the reviews and send an updated proposal (video and poster) by 5 March 2015.

Round 2: Design Challenge Competition

  1. Design Challenge Invitation. The teams whose proposals got accepted are invited to participate in the 24-hour Design Challenge that will be held on the 7-8 April 2014.
  2. Registration.The teams must register by 7 March 2015 to secure their entries in the challenge.The registration fee include the design challenge competition and 2-day CHIuXiD 2015 conference fee.
  3. Design Challenge Day. The challenge will be held on the 7 – 8 April 2015 at the Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung, Indonesia.
  4. Procedure. Each team will be given a design brief related to the solutions they proposed in their proposals. They will work at the campus during working hour and at their own place until the deadline of the 24-hour challenge.
  5. Final Submission. They must submit a 2-min video or a A0-size printed poster (84 x 119 cm or approximately 33” x 47”), and a prototype before the end of the challenge on 8 April 2015.
  6. Review Process. The videos, posters and prototypes will be exhibited at the CHIuXiD 2015 conference from 8 April 2015 for the audience to vote and a panel of international judges to assess.
  7. Selection. Based on the results of the panel assessment and votes of the audience, four teams will be chosen to present their design solutions at the conference. Two winners from both categories will be selected from these four nominated teams.
  8. Awards. The prize award ceremony will be conducted during the CHIuXiD 2015 conference.

Selection Criteria

  1. Ability to design and develop an interactive product, application, service, or systems using technology to tackle social issues in Indonesia.
  2. Ability to create design solutions that can empower people in a unique way and let them express in their own colours and needs.
  3. Ability to answer the following questions:
  • Does the solution solve a real problem of a real user group?
  • Is the user group disconnected from current technologies?
  • Does the solution use technology in a unique and creative way to solve the problem?
  • Were relevant prior works properly cited?
  • Were analysis, synthesis, design and evaluation sufficient and systematic?
  • Was the fidelity of the prototypes sufficient to demonstrate the ideas?
  • Was the solution well-presented?
